Growing up as a young Gnome, Dengal Doosenberry Duthiford Dagglefingers understood that all folk of his kind have a special magical nature. But Dengal also knew that he was different. Dengal could always feel the energy of the world around him. Sometimes, when Dengal is underground and near lots of iron, his fur stands straight up making him look like a walking puffball. A reason why Dengal tries to keep his fur as closely clipped as possible.
Dengal’s elder sister, Catula Cullflower Duthiford Cuttlebottom, always was making fun of Dengel when it happened.

Eventually Dengal realized the he was absorbing energies from his surroundings. The young Gnome eventually learned how to channel this energy into a focused bolt, which he used summarily to pay back his sister for every laugh she ever belched. Much mischief was accomplished by zapping people. Soon Dengal could hit a target all the way across Hobbgobble Pass.

Dengal’s father, Diffle Dagheart Duthiford Dagglefingers, was worried for his son. But Dengal’s mother, Carla Crankhandle Duthiford Cuttlebottom, sought out a local mystic who helped the family understand the strange effects. The sage tried to assure the Duthifords that young Dengal’s magnetic properties were a special blessing, not a curse. They tried to believe, but the Duthifords quickly became the talk of the Hillhole. The family tried to pay the talk no mind but they always noticed the turning heads and abruptly ending conversations.

Being a year older than Dengal, Catula Cullflower Duthiford Cuttlebottom left for her Shearing one day. At first Dengal thought life would be bliss without his annoying sister, but after a time he realized that no one else was any fun at all. So, to his parent’s delight, Dengal left home in search of his sister nine months before his own Shearing date.

After a few weeks of travel Dengal found himself poor and hungry. He got a job at Harrowares House of Horror, a type of fun house show with gadgets and smoke and mirrors to scare folks who pay good coin for such things. The Gnome who owned the place had invented all sorts of contraptions for the House of Horror. Dengal got a job zapping customers’ feet from under the floor. The idea was biting rats, tiny illusionary rodents fled about inside the hallway, Dengal’s blast was supposed to simulate a rat bite. Eventually Dengal learned how to add a mind-altering effect to his energy ray. Some folks would come out of the house of horrors truly shaken to the core in fright.

But after a few months Dengal grew bored of the mischievous, but mundane work, so he set out once again in search of his sister.
His parents were dismayed when Dengal returned home the day before his official Shearing began. He had come home only to collect his Shearing money, once that day arrived he left again. He left Hillhole behind, but his coming and going was the buzz of the Hillhole for a time again, until some other gossip left Dengal a fading memory in their tiny lives.
Dengal has yet to find his sister Catula. He has, however, managed to get into trouble after trouble.
